The Off-Grid Buffalo Facility has been recognized by Solar Builder Magazine as a Solar Builder Project of the Year (Under 100 kW).
The annual Solar Builder Project of the Year awards highlight standout solar installations from across the country, recognizing projects that demonstrate strong system design, innovation, and meaningful community impact. The Off-Grid Buffalo Facility was selected in the Under 100 kW category for its off-grid design and its role in supporting essential operations at the Northern Cheyenne Buffalo Ranch.
The project features a fully off-grid solar and battery system designed to provide reliable, resilient power in a remote setting. By operating independently from the utility grid, the system strengthens energy resilience while reducing long-term energy costs and reliance on fossil fuels. The installation supports daily operations at the buffalo facility and demonstrates how clean energy can be tailored to meet the needs of Tribal lands and rural infrastructure.
This recognition reflects a collective effort made possible through close collaboration between the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, project partners, and technical teams. Indigenized Energy led development and coordination, with Freedom Forever serving as the project contractor, equipment and training from Jinko Solar, and major funding from the Honnold Foundation and Empowered by Light. The project was guided by Tribal priorities and built with a focus on long-term sustainability, practical performance, and local benefit.
“Projects like the Off-Grid Buffalo Facility show what is possible when renewable energy solutions are designed with community leadership at the center,” said Cody Two Bears, CEO of Indigenized Energy. “This work is about building systems that serve real needs while supporting energy sovereignty and self-determination.”
The Off-Grid Buffalo Facility stands as an example of how small-scale, off-grid solar projects can deliver outsized impact when aligned with community goals and strong partnerships.
